Carnival in Mallorca 2020

Carnival in Mallorca is a time to party big-style! With the start of Lent looming, this year´s Carnival festivities take place around the island and in Palma over the weekend  21 – 23 February 2020.

Known in Mallorca as `Els Darrers Dies´(the Last Days ) reflecting the fact that these are the last days of meat-eating prior to the abstinence of Lent, towns and villages across the island celebrate by putting on one of the biggest fiestas of the year. Central to the celebration is the Carnival parade (there are in fact two, the children´s parade "Sa Rueta" and the grown-up´s parade "Sa Rua") which involves bands, floats, costumes, masks and lots of dancing. It is a riot of colour and merry-making. The biggest and most exuberant parade of course takes place in Palma.

Palma celebrates Sa Rua and Sa Rueta on different days this year. The Town Hall has decided to separate the two fiestas so that they are not concentrated in one day, as has been the case until now. Sa Rua 2020 will take place in the afternoon of Sunday 23 February, with a parade of people and floats through the centre of Palma. Once again this year a jury will choose the best costumes in different categories, and the prizes will be announced after the parade. On Sunday 16 February, between 11am and 2pm, Sa Rueta 2020 will once again fill La Rambla, Carrer Unión, Plaza del Mercat, Plaza Weyler, Plaza Joan Carles I Jaime III, El Borne, Plaza de la Reina and/or Hort del Rei with children's games and entertainment.
