Santa Margalida is located about 45 km from Palma in the north of Mallorca. The municipality has about 12,000 inhabitants and consists mainly of three settlements, the main town of Santa Margalida, located 10 km inland, and the tourist resorts of Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina, located on the Bay of Alcúdia. It is part of the "Plà de Mallorca" region and, as its name suggests, it is one of the flattest municipalities in Mallorca. Also a large part of the Natur protected area "S'Albufera" is located in the municipality.
Santa Margalida - In the north of Mallorca
The north of Mallorca stretches from Alcudia to Art and includes inland northern municipalities such as Santa Margalida, Muro, Sa Pobla, etc. Founded by the Phoenicians, Alcúdia, now the second largest city in Mallorca, is said to be the oldest settlement in the Balearic Islands. At the turn of the last century B.C. Alcúdia came under the command of Emperor Augustus, many well preserved Roman ruins still bear witness to this today. The bay of Alcúdia is one of the largest beaches in Mallorca and extends in a semicircle for about 40 km, partly surrounded by the nature reserve S`Albufera. The bay ends in the municipality of Artá, whose main town is a popular destination for excursions, with small steep streets and the Sant Salvador hermitage overlooking the village.
